The Challenge: Coordinating a Multi-Role Production Team Across a Distributed Venue
Foothills Community Church in Molalla, Oregon runs a professional-grade production operation — multiple camera operators, a lighting technician, a video director, and a graphics operator working simultaneously across the auditorium, lobby, and sanctuary. Coordinating a team that size, spread across a 125-foot span, with no reliable intercom infrastructure meant missed cues, delayed transitions, and crew members relying on hand signals and headset-free shouting to stay in sync.
When Foothills brought in Pro Connect Group to assess the situation, the need was clear: a wireless intercom system robust enough for live production, simple enough for a volunteer-heavy church crew, and compact enough to deploy across the full square footage of their facility without dead zones or signal degradation.
The Approach: Selecting the Right Intercom for a Permanent Installation
Not every intercom system is designed for the demands of a church production environment. Many systems built for professional broadcast are overengineered for a permanent installation at this scale — expensive, complex to operate, and difficult for a rotating volunteer crew to pick up quickly. Consumer-grade alternatives sacrifice the audio clarity and range that a multi-camera production requires.
Pro Connect Group evaluated the Pliant Technologies MicroCom XR Wireless Intercom System as a purpose-fit solution. The MicroCom XR is built on Pliant’s CrewCom wireless platform, which is specifically designed to handle distributed team communication in demanding live production environments.
“MicroCom XR was the perfect fit for this church because it’s easy to use, affordable, reliable, and provides flawless coverage,” said Justin Hamilton, Principal and Account Executive at Pro Connect Group.
The Deployment: 125-Foot Coverage Across Three Production Zones
PCG designed and installed the MicroCom XR system to deliver full wireless coverage across Foothills Community Church’s complete production footprint — auditorium floor, lobby positions, and sanctuary — a span of 125 feet. The system equipped each role on the production team with dedicated belt packs, allowing camera operators, the video director, the lighting technician, and the graphics operator to maintain real-time communication without compromising mobility or audio quality.
Pliant’s MicroCom XR operates in the DECT spectrum, avoiding the RF congestion common in venues with active Wi-Fi networks and multiple wireless microphone systems. For a church environment where microphone RF coordination is already a factor, keeping the intercom on a clean spectrum was a meaningful technical advantage.
The installation was designed for immediate usability by the church’s production team — minimal configuration, clear audio, and a system that any crew member could operate after a brief orientation.
The Results: Zero Issues Since Installation
“Since the install, they haven’t had a single issue with the system,” Hamilton noted. The Foothills production team now coordinates every service and live production event with consistent, broadcast-quality intercom communication across their entire venue.
The clarity of communication has improved transition timing between camera operators, reduced the lag between director cues and technical execution, and allowed the production team to operate with the confidence of a system that simply works — service after service.
“What really sets MicroCom XR apart is the combination of broadcast-grade audio clarity and a tough, compact build,” Hamilton added. “And Pliant as a company has been fantastic to work with — their team is responsive and always ready to help.”
