Motorsports events are among the most technically demanding AV environments in live event production. High ambient noise levels, open-air venues with no acoustic boundaries, complex power distribution across large areas, and dense RF environments from car electronics, timing systems, and wireless devices — all of it happens simultaneously while your program runs. Production companies that understand these variables deliver a professional motorsports experience. Those that don’t deliver muddy PA, dropped wireless channels, and video walls that wash out in direct sun.

The SPL Problem: Why Standard PA Systems Fail at the Track
A racecar engine at full throttle generates somewhere between 120 and 140 dB SPL at close range. A typical corporate event PA system is designed for 90–100 dB at the listening position. The math is unfavorable.
Professional motorsports PA starts with high-efficiency, high-SPL line array systems — the same type of speaker arrays used for outdoor music festivals — positioned to cover the primary spectator areas. Coverage design accounts for the directional orientation of the racing surface: spectators generally face the track, which means speaker coverage needs to reach them from behind or from the side, not from a stage in front.
Delay speakers at remote positions (pit lane viewing areas, hospitality suites, grandstands far from the main PA position) extend coverage without requiring the main system to push harder. Even coverage at lower absolute levels beats uneven coverage at higher levels.
RF Coordination at Motorsports Events
Motorsports venues are RF nightmares. Cars carry their own wireless telemetry systems. Race operations run wireless communications across multiple channels. Timing transponders operate in frequencies adjacent to audio wireless bands. Television broadcasts, if present, add camera IFBs and wireless intercom on top of the audio wireless.
Professional RF coordination at a motorsports event requires a spectrum analyzer scan of the actual venue before the event day, frequency coordination across every wireless device on site (not just the audio wireless), and separation from the car electronics frequencies. At events where cars are present on the day of the audio setup, coordination is done with cars present on the grid — because the RF environment with 30 cars running electronics is meaningfully different from an empty paddock.
For commentary systems specifically: wireless handhelds in the commentary booth area are workable but wired backup connections should always be available. A dropped wireless mic during a race call is not recoverable in the moment.
Production Intercom for Race Operations
Race day operations require communication between the commentary booth, the start/finish line, any remote camera positions, pit lane coverage, and the hospitality or VIP area. That’s five or more simultaneous positions that need to hear each other without relying on the same RF spectrum as the audio wireless.

LED Video Walls at Outdoor Motorsports Events
Indoor LED panels optimized for conference rooms do not work outdoors in direct sunlight. Outdoor LED video walls require minimum brightness specifications of 5,000–6,000 nits to compete with direct sunlight; indoor panels typically output 800–1,500 nits. In daytime outdoor conditions, an undersized LED wall disappears — visible only when positioned in full shade or after sunset.
For motorsports events, LED wall placement matters as much as brightness. Ideal positioning puts the display in the spectators’ natural sightline while minimizing direct sun angle on the panel face. Ground-stacked configurations work for most motorsports venues; truss-mounted configurations offer more flexibility at events with permanent grandstand infrastructure. Mobile LED trailer systems — self-contained LED displays on trailer platforms — are increasingly common for events where structural truss is impractical.
Power Distribution at Motorsports Venues
Permanent motorsports facilities (road courses, drag strips, oval tracks) vary widely in their power infrastructure. Some have robust 3-phase power at multiple venue positions. Others have limited single-phase circuits that were never designed for event production loads.
PCG assesses power availability during the pre-event site survey and brings distribution equipment appropriate to the venue: power distros, feeder cable, and generator tie-ins where permanent power is insufficient. Running a full PA system, LED wall, lighting rig, and production infrastructure from an inadequate panel is a recipe for noise, ground loops, and breaker trips during the race.
Generator power for motorsports events is often preferable to venue power — it gives the production team a clean, dedicated power source isolated from the vehicle charging systems, timing equipment, and hospitality loads that share the venue electrical infrastructure.
Commentary and Announcer Systems
The announcer system at a motorsports event serves both the spectator experience and the operational communication between race control and the announcer. A professional commentary system includes:
- A dedicated monitor mix for the announcer that includes their own voice, any co-announcer feeds, and a program audio mix from the PA system
- A direct line to race control or the event director for real-time information
- A confidence monitor or timing feed display so the announcer can call positions without relying entirely on radio
- A PA feed delay aligned to the announcer’s monitor so the announcer hears the PA output in sync with their own voice — eliminating the disorienting echo that happens when the PA delay is mismatched
